About this event
Please join us on Thursday, November 18th at 7:00 PM for the October Reader's Circle. We will be discussing Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell. This meeting will take place at the Clubhouse. As a special treat, Virginia Strain, PhD, English Professor and Shakespearian Scholar at Loyola University will be joining us early in the meeting to give some history and insights into Hamlet and Elizabethan England.
Warwickshire in the 1580s. Agnes is a woman as feared as she is sought after for her unusual gifts. She settles with her husband in Henley street, Stratford, and has three children: a daughter, Susanna, and then twins, Hamnet and Judith. The boy, Hamnet, dies in 1596, aged eleven. Four years or so later, the husband writes a play called Hamlet. This award winning novel breathes full-blooded life into the story of a loss usually consigned to literary footnotes, and provides an unforgettable vindication of Agnes, a woman intriguingly absent from history. Notable book New York Times 2020. Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award. "Not to worry if Shakespeare challenged" says one reviewer.
Please RSVP and join us at the Clubhouse.
